Open Question: What do you think of this writing?
This is the start to a story I’m writing… What are your opinins, thoughts, tips?
All criticism is welcome!
The phone rang just before half-past seven, while she was standing at the bedroom window, gazing at the garden below without really seeing it.
She had watered the flowers, which had taken a long time, a good fifty minutes. After which she had gone inside and leafed through the newspaper without finding in it anything of much interest. Then she had made herself a piece of bread and butter, and sprinkled sugar on it.
All of which were done in a state of dreaminess. Her thoughts were elsewhere, far from the mundane things she was doing.
She stiffened for a second when the phone rang. Then she turned and flashed downstairs.
She knew who it was even before she drew up the receiver.
‘Hello, Mummy.’
‘Hello, darling. You answered the phone very quickly.’ There was a smile in her voice.
‘I know, I’ve been waiting all afternoon for it. Have you met him?’
‘Yes.’
‘Tell me, what is he like?’
‘I think you should wait to see him yourself. I don’t want to tell you anything else about him. If I do, you’ll have created an impression of him in your mind even before you see him. It won’t be a surprise for you. Don’t you think?’
‘But…’ She considered this for a second, staring at herself in the glass. Her hair was getting quite long. ‘All right. I’ll wait. He’s not there, beside you, is he?’
‘No, no. I’m in the toilets. I have to go. Our flight’s just been called out.’
‘Okay. I’ll come and meet you at half-past nine. I can’t wait, Mummy.’
‘Me too. Bye, darling.’
‘Bye.’
She replaced the receiver slowly and went upstairs to her bedroom, resuming her position by the window. She thought for a while.
The letter, a month before. In a thick envelope, with a foreign stamp.
She had been late for school that morning, dashing down the path, turning on to the road, leaving the narrow front gate swinging behind her, colliding with the postman. They apologised simultaneously and he handed her the envelope, smiling his old, patient smile, before proceeding down the road to the next house, on the corner.
She gave the letter to her mother when she came home from school that afternoon.
The exclamations. The excitement. The planning.
This afternoon, her mother going to the airport to catch the 14:15 flight. Seeing her off, standing at the wide window on the first floor and waving at the plane as it soared into the air like a swallow.
Her mother had caught the flight and arrived. After having waited for some hours, her mother had met him off the plane, and now the two were boarding the flight home together.
Outside, a robin sang a tired song in the sycamore tree by the road. A lawnmower started up, a constant, steady hum in the distance.
She lay down on the bed and fell asleep, and didn’t wake until the clock struck half-past eight.
The airport was busy when she walked in; a flight from Schiphol had just come in and deposited a hundred or more passengers into the terminal.
She looked around at the check-in desks and the escalators and the throngs of people. There was something strangely thrilling about airports, something that she could not quite place her finger on. She struggled to find a word to describe it.
Did it make her feel happy? No. It was deeper than that, more intense.
Excited? Yes and no. It did make her feel excited, but not in an animated, lively way. The excitement it made her feel was darker.
A word came to her. It was a word that she thought was greatly misused, to the extent that it was unoriginal, clichéd, tasteless. But she felt that on this occasion, it seemed completely precise and right to use. It was the word that did the most justice to that strange quality of airports. She felt the satisfaction that finding a word that describes exactly what you mean, imagine, brings.
There was something strangely sexy about airports.
In the arrivals lounge she sat straight and tense, waiting for the double doors to erupt with people at any moment. The plane had landed, she knew; she had seen it with her own eyes, taxiing down the runway at tremendous speed.
Somewhere behind her, a radio was playing quietly. She heard the half-past nine news bulletin. A folk song followed, long and rambling.
She wondered if they had come off the plane yet. Had they gone through the passport control? Had they gone to the baggage area to collect his suitcases?
The song changed. Eleanor Rigby sounded softly in the lounge.
She started and listened, her brow furrowed. It was such a lonely song, she thought. So heartbreaking, but yet so hopeful. It made her feel like crying.
She heard voices beyond the double doors. They were coming! A wave of excitement and anticipation crept over her.
The first few passengers appeared. She rose from her seat and craned her neck, searching for the familiar face of her mother.
Was that her? No, too dark, although she did look very like her mother from the si
